After taking home her first gold medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics, U.S. women’s national basketball team standout and WNBA star Elena Delle Donne teamed up with Nike to give back to her hometown of Wilmington, Del.
More specifically, Delle Donne gave infant-sized Nike sneakers to new mothers and fathers at the Christiana Care hospital over the weekend.
“Happy to get the next generation of players started on the right foot!” Delle Donne wrote on Instagram. “Happy birthday to all my little buddies at Christiana Care hospitals who are sporting these Nike kicks.”
A story from Bleacher Report noted that Delle Donne and Nike had promised to give away the shoes if the U.S. women’s team was able to win the gold, which it did following Saturday’s 101-72 blowout win against Spain.
A gold medal is the latest in a long list of accolades for Delle Donne, who’s been selected for every WNBA All-Star Game since 2013, her rookie season with the Chicago Sky. She won the 2015 WNBA Most Valuable Player honor after averaging a league-high 23.4 points-per-game.

“It all starts now. 20 years ago, it started in Wilmington for a little champ just like you,” read a message from Nike enclosed with the sneakers. “And today Elena Delle Donne conquered the world.”
