Nike Donates Exclusive Jordan 12s To Doernbecher Children’s Hospital Auction

In an effort to raise money for the OHSU Doernbecher Children’s Hospital in Portland, Ore., Nike donated 12 pairs of exclusive, one-of-a-kind Air Jordan XIIs crafted by renowned designer Mark Smith to be auctioned on eBay. The auctions for the shoes, which are signed by Smith as well as their original designer, Tinker Hatfield, will continue until Nov. 21, when the shoes from the OHSU Doernbecher Freestyle program will be made available at retail.

The 12 pairs — collectively known as #DBDozen — represent the years the brand and the hospital have teamed up for the OHSU Doernbecher Freestyle program. All proceeds from the shoes’ sales will go to the hospital.

As of 10 a.m. today, the auction price of the first pair of one-of-a-kind Air Jordan XIIs was up to $8,500 after 43 bids, with two hours left on the auction.

According to Nike, the OHSU Doernbecher Freestyle program is a platform for six patient-designers at the hospital who are battling life-threatening illnesses to create shoes and apparel that reflect their inspirations and aspirations. The collections have raised more than $11 million to date, with the proceeds going to different practices within the hospital, including clinical programs, hospital construction and to cover the cost of care for uninsured children. The program, conceived by Michael Doherty, Nike’s senior creative director of global brand presentations and a board member of Doernbecher Children’s Hospital Foundation, has enlisted 70 patients at the hospital since its start in 2004.

This year’s Freestyle Collection features six limited-edition styles with designs that include a glow-in-the-dark dancer, an Egyptian pyramid, the signature of comic book legend Stan Lee, a personalized family crest, the Bat-Signal and Sasquatch riding a unicorn. A collection of apparel will also be available to accompany the shoes.
