Nike’s Rory McIlroy Smashes Golf Club After Errant Shot At British Open

Furious with his performance at the British Open, Rory McIlroy let his feelings be known.

The Nike-sponsored athlete smashed his golf club on Saturday after his second shot on the 16th hole at the Royal Troon Golf Club in Troon, Scotland.

McIlroy hurled the 3-wood on the green, snapping the club’s head off during his frustration with the errant hit.

He had on his Nike Lunar Control 4 cleats, which retail for $170 on the brand’s website.

The golf shoes feature a waterproof microfiber upper, Lunarlon cushioning technology for comfort, and ultra-lightweight Flywire cables integrated with the laces for a secure fit.

In June, the athlete announced that he will not participate in the Rio Olympic Games, citing fears over the Zika virus.

“After speaking with those closest to me, I’ve come to realize that my health, and my family’s health, comes before anything else,” he said. “Even though the risk of infection from the Zika virus is considered low, it is a risk nonetheless and a risk I am unwilling to take.”
