Rollin’ With Heelys: Why Ryan Fitzpatrick Was Almost Kicked Out of Walmart

This Sunday, Tom Brady and the New England Patriots will welcome Ryan Fitzpatrick and his teammates onto their field at Gillette Stadium. But not everyone has been so welcoming to the quarterback of the New York Jets.

Fitzpatrick revealed to Footwear News recently that he’s become a big fan of a certain brand of wheeled shoes, which are highly frowned upon in public places.

“One of my favorite pairs of shoes are my Heelys,” the 32-year-old athlete told us earlier this week at the Foot Locker “On Our Feet” gala in New York. “I didn’t have a pair when I was younger. I never had them until I was a size 12 and I found out they have them for adults.”

He said he’s been rolling around everywhere in his cool kicks, even where it’s not allowed. “They frown up them in Walmart, even if you’re just walking around. They told me I had to take my wheels out. I almost got kicked out.”

Luckily, the NFL pro has plenty of other footwear options in his closet from his shoe and apparel sponsor, Nike. Fitzpatrick said that when he’s not speeding around in Heelys, he can usually be found sporting the Swoosh.

“[The Nike Zoom Vomero] is my favorite shoe. I think they’re really comfortable and have good color choices,” he said. “I wear some sort of Vomero every day. And I wear them for training, too.”

So in a sense Sunday will be not just a showdown between Brady and Fitzpatrick but also a shoe-down between their favorite labels.

On Brady’s side, you have Under Armour and Ugg. And for Fitzpatrick, there’s Nike and Heelys. Which one would you rather take a spin in?
