The Surprising Brand That Scored Big In The U.S. Open Finals

Tennis players Stanislas Wawrinka and Angelique Kerber shook things up at this year’s U.S. Open, each barreling past top-ranked players to grab titles this weekend.

But there was another winner in the mix: Japanese athletic brand Yonex. The company, which makes tennis, badminton and golf gear, sponsors Wawrinka head to toe, and Kerber uses the brand’s rackets.

In his four-set win over U.S. Open defending champion Novak Djokovic, Wawrinka wore Yonex’s Power Cushion Eclipsion black tennis shoes with pink accents. The shoes retail for $129.

Kerber wears gear from Adidas but uses Yonex Vcore Si 100 rackets. With her title, she surpassed Serena Williams to become the women’s No. 1-ranked player. Kerber also won the French Open this year and a silver medal at the Rio Olympics last month.

Yonex could perhaps draw the approval of those tennis fans who did not like Nike’s neon apparel and shoes for this year’s tournament.
