If you haven’t already picked up some new cold-weather boots this winter, now is the time to do it. Not only are retailers slashing prices to make space for their spring inventory (yes, sandals and flip-flops already!), but the middle and eastern parts of the U.S. are about to get hit with an Arctic blast.
This weekend, when hearts will be warmed by Valentine’s Day celebrations, toes will be turning icy cold as temperatures are expected to hit record lows from the Midwest to Maine. In some areas, windchills could plummet 20 to 30 degrees below zero.
While a nice, blazing fireplace is of course the best remedy for cold feet, many footwear companies have developed cold-weather boots that can withstand the elements. And best of all, these styles are fashionable enough to wear out on the town should you be brave and want to venture out.
Take, for instance, Columbia’s Minx Mid II boots, which are lined with the brand’s proprietary Omni-Heat reflective material that retains warmth all day long. The boots also feature 200 grams of insulation and are rated to handle temperatures as low as -25F.

Then there are the Canadian boots brands, which have honed their winter-proofing skills to an art. Sorel‘s Joan of Arctic and Tofino boots are stylish options for protection, as are shoes from Cougar, Kamik and Manitobah Mukluk.
And Montreal-based Pajar offers a range of options that fit every budget, from its sporty shearling-lined Alice boot ($180) to the ultra-luxe fur-trimmed Fox Trot ($610).
