A division of Wolverine Worldwide was awarded contracts to manufacture Temperate Weather Combat boots for the allied forces in Afghanistan by the U.S. Defense Logistics Agency.
It was announced that Bates, which already produces boots and shoes for the U.S. military, was awarded the contracts, valued at $27 million. The boots boast Vibram outsoles and Gore-Tex waterproof-breathable technology and will be made in both black and tan.
“Bates continues to produce some of the world’s most technologically advanced footwear for men and women in combat,” said Blake Krueger, chairman, CEO and president of Wolverine Worldwide, in a statement.
“We are committed to being the leader in providing footwear solutions for all branches of the U.S. military and are privileged to supply these performance benefits inherent in our Michigan-made combat boots.”

As required by law for U.S. defense contracts, the boots are constructed of 100 percent American-made materials and will be manufactured at the Bates facility in Big Rapids, Mich.
For the third quarter, Wolverine’s net income totaled $45.8 million, a 21 percent decline from the year-ago quarter, when income totaled $57.8 million. In November, Wolverine Worldwide appointed Richie Woodworth as the new president of its Lifestyle Group, taking over for Andy Simister, who is returning to the U.K. for personal reasons.
