Aldi Creates $9 Canvas Sneakers Inspired by Vans

Inspired by the ever-popular “gorpcore” trend, Germand multinational family-owned discount supermarket chain Aldi has released a new collection of fall 2023 gear.

The fall 2023 multi-piece collection is heavily influenced by the outdoorsy, utilitarian look, incorporating the supermarket’s instantly recognizable color scheme featuring vibrant blues, orange, red and yellow. The collection features a range of apparel and accessories including hoodies, a travel mug, backpack, beanies and pajamas among other things. All of the fall-ready gear remarkably retails for under $13 and is available for purchase now on Aldi’s website.

Two standout pieces in the collection are their canvas slip-on footwear offerings that are inspired by Vans‘ slip-on kicks. The sneakers are mainly comprised of durable canvas uppers, almond-shaped toes and thick non-slip rubber soles. The white colorway includes striped detailing in yellow, orange, red and black while the color-blocked style incorporates shades found in Aldi’s logo. Additionally, details on both styles include Aldi branding on the heels and on the insoles.

The canvas footwear also includes memory foam insoles for a cushy fit and comes in a wide range of both men’s and women’s sizes.

Essentially, gorpcore is a trend in which the participant wears utilitarian styles, think cargo pants, rain jackets and wellies, outside of their intended use. Gorpcore takes rugged hiking boots or parkas and offers them a colorful twist, worn with casual pieces that make said utilitarian styles more wearable. Celebrities like Bella Hadid, Asap Rocky and Frank Ocean have honed-in on the gorpcore trend, putting their own fashion-foward spin on it in a street style sort of manner.

Aldi is a discount supermarket hailing from Germany that operates over 10,000 stores in 20 countries. The chain was founded by brothers Karl and Theo Albrecht in 1946 following the takeover of their mother’s store in Essen.
