Since you never know who may come knocking at your door, it’s wise to look your best — from head to toe.
Here’s where friends and entrepreneurs Marisa Sharkey and Bianca Gates come in with their recently launched line of elegant at-home footwear, San Francisco-based Birdies. The collection puts the emphasis on comfort, designed with plush memory foam insoles with built-in arch support and flexible rubber, with select styles featuring cozy faux shearling. Outsoles are made of rubber and suitable for a short run to the bus stop to pick up the kids or a coffee run to Starbucks.

While the looks are sophisticated, featuring uppers in supple suede and printed calf hair finished off with novelty tassels and faux flowers, the line targets women who don’t take themselves too seriously. “It’s the fun girl you want to hang out with,” said Gates, emphasizing these can include consumers from 18 to 60-something.

According to Sharkey, the shoes are meant to be worn when enjoying a relaxed evening at home with family as well as for nights of grown-up entertaining when cocktails are being served. And, for those telecommuters, they comfortably bridge the gap between a shoe and a slipper.
The collection is available at Birdies, although distribution will be expanded this fall to department and boutiques. The slippers retail for $140, with each pair coming with its own fabric travel bag. An expanded assortment will be available beginning mid-October.
