Matisse Footwear Introduces Companion Handbag Collection From Spain

Matisse Footwear is grabbing a bigger share of women’s accessories closets.

The company, known for its slightly rugged, gently distressed footwear, has added bags to the mix. Three styles are now available from the Los Angeles-based brand and include the Fjord, a hobo at $279; the Primo, a weekender at $279; and the Sienna, a clutch with detachable shoulder strap at $200.

Staying true to the brand’s DNA, the bags are made with its signature washed leathers and produced in Spain. “Adding bags to our product offering was really organic,” said Sheena Parks, creative director of Matisse, about the decision to expand the offering. “Customers come to us for the unique materials we apply to footwear, so we thought, ‘Let’s do bags.’ We focused on a few core pieces that work for everyday life, the kind of bags you can schlep around and not worry about. We wanted functionality, but nothing stuffy.”

The bags are available online as well as better boutiques. According to Parks, a companion collection of belts, inspired by the rock ‘n’ roll look of Bruce Springsteen circa the ’80s, will be added for fall ’16.
