7 Tips for Accessorizing From Matisse Footwear’s Creative Director

Accessories are among the easiest and most cost-effective ways to update a fall wardrobe. Giving women a chance to add a new element to their fashion closets, Matisse Footwear in El Segundo, Calif., is expanding its product range this fall with a launch into belts.

The two-style offering is made in Spain and includes the Sofia, a black mixed-media style with multicolored metal hardware, and the Rosita, an Americana-inspired belt with antiqued hardware. The belts are available online and retail for $125.

Like the footwear collection, creative director Sheena Parks is behind the design of the companion belt line. Here, she talks about the brand’s fashion point of view and offers head-to-toe styling tips.

1.  How would you describe the footwear collection’s point of view?

Watch on FN

SP: Rugged, trend driven, but never fashion victim.

2. Why the decision to add belts?

SP: It complements our Americana vibe and completed our girls’ total look.

3. What are some of your styling tips for wearing belts?

SP: Our vision is tucked in tee, high-waist jeans and belt out loud and proud. But as with an accessory, anything goes. That is the beauty of footwear and belts. Make it your own.

4. Matisse also offers bags, how important are accessories today when putting a look together?

SP: You can take a very basic look from a two to a 10 with the right accessory. Be it bag, belt or shoe.

5. Who is Matisse’s target consumer?

SP: Accessories have a way of breaking age barriers. We encourage that in our customers. If it makes you feel good, wear it, girl.

6. Where do you take you inspiration from?

SP: Belts came to us because of The Boss himself — Bruce Springsteen and the cover of “Born in the USA.” Enough said. The bag and shoes are more daily and organic. We live and breathe footwear, and the bags follow the vibe we’re are creating for our footwear.

7. For women who may not currently have a belt in their accessory wardrobe, how are you encouraging them for the first time?

SP: By styling them and showing our end-user a how-to [demonstration] in our social posts and campaign imagery. We love watching our retailers put together looks with our new accessories. It’s so pure and tells the story so well, regardless of region or fashion-forward tendency. Make it your own. That’s the true role of accessories for the modern contemporary consumer.
