Espadrilles are a no-brainer for the summer season. They’re comfortable, effortless, and undeniably chic for any warm weather occasion. Plus, they’re constructed in various heel heights, silhouettes and fabric uppers with esparto rope or braided jute soles.
Over the past few seasons, we’ve seen the espadrille trend reappear with fresh renditions on spring runways — but the footwear style isn’t anything new.
While the espadrille has a Spanish heritage dating back to the 13th century, it was Yves Saint Laurent who ignited the global fashion craze in the early ’70s. The legendary designer met Lorenzo Castañer and his wife, Isabel, of Catalonia-based espadrille manufacturer Castañer, at a trade show in Paris. Then, Laurent commissioned an espadrille wedge design from the duo known as the “Carina.” Crafted from high-quality canvas and woven jute, the iconic espadrille has become increasingly popular ever since and now costs $135.
Today, the breathable shoe is seen on the feet of Meghan Markle and French it-girls like Jeanne Damas. Plus, it’s ideal for busy city girls thanks to its comfy platform and ankle-securing ties.
