Why Wearing Socks Can Help You Fall Asleep Faster

There’s nothing better than a good night’s sleep or an afternoon nap to keep the body energized and the mind alert — and there’s nothing better than a pair of socks to help you get those Zs.

According to the National Sleep Foundation (a nonprofit dedicated to educating people about the value of sleep), wearing socks to bed can help a person fall asleep faster.

The reason behind this age-old phenomenon is circulation. When your feet are warm, the blood vessels dilate (also known as vasodilation), increasing blood flow throughout the body and warming you from head to toe. This signals to the brain that it’s time to sleep. Hot water bottles or heating blankets can have a similar effect, but they’re definitely not as cute as socks, and there could be a risk of overheating with the bottles and blankets.

Studies have also suggested that socks can have other health benefits in bed, such as reducing the frequency of hot flashes or night sweats and decreasing toe and foot swelling through better circulation.

And for the cosmetically minded, wearing socks after moisturizing your feet will help soften rough or cracked heels. (Check out some powerful over-the counter foot creams suggested by a podiatrist.)

Experts recommend wearing sock styles that are made from natural materials such as cotton or wool. Wool is particularly favored because it is a breathable material and is naturally moisture-wicking, which means your feet will stay dry the whole night long.

Below are several styles from brands such as Ugg, Smartwool, L.L.Bean and Darn Tough Vermont that are napworthy.
