adidas is approaching the exact date of their founding seventy-five years ago, in 1949. The legendary footwear brand is likely to have some special releases lined up for the occasion, and this week we got an early look at a pair of the SL72 runner in a limited-edition colorway for the anniversary.
adidas began as a partnership between two brothers making athletic footwear. After a disagreement, the two split, one founding adidas and the other Puma, with the former being officially founded on August 18th, 1949. This year marks seventy-five years of the Three Stripes’ footwear, and they are almost certainly going to be celebrating next month. Nothing has been officially announced by the brand so far, but this week we have an early look at a special pair of the SL 72 for the occasion.
adidas’ SL 72 (short for Super Light), was first introduced for the 1972 Summer Olympics, which took place in their home country in Munich, Germany. The silhouette holds a special place in the brand’s history, as the first shoe to bear the iconic Trefoil logo that now denotes their Originals lifestyle product. For its 75th Anniversary edition, the SL 72 is getting a limited-edition colorway. The pair features a white nylon base with off-white suede overlays, and bright red leather accents for the stripes and eyestays. Gold foil branding is added to the heels, with one reading ’75’ and the other featuring the brand name and Trefoil.

adidas has not yet officially announced the release of their 75th anniversary collection, but the SL72 is currently expected to release next month, on August 18th, 2024. The first shoe to carry the trefoil logo, the red & white look will likely be available from both adidas and select retailers, with a slightly elevated price tag around $120.
