COSTS & FDMTL Denim Team Up for New Balance’s Latest Collaborative 2002R

New Balance’s streak of collaborations featuring the 2002R continues this month, with another team-up between brands. This time around, China’s COSTS and Japan’s FDMTL deliver a Sashiko-inspired take on the retro runner.

Earlier this year, New Balance announced a string of collaborations to help relaunch one of their classic runners, the 2002R that first debuted nearly two decades ago. The special-edition releases would help the Boston brand highlight the retro model in a number of different detailed color schemes before the 2002 made a full return to shelves. The project kicked off with Salehe Bembury’s Grand Canyon-inspired pair earlier this season before Invincible and N. HOOLYWOOD delivered their version just last week. Now, New Balance is teaming up with China’s COSTS and Japan’s FDMTL Denim for a Sashiko-inspired take on the revived runner. This iteration of the 2002 features an all-over indigo blue color scheme, from the mesh base to outer suede layers. The paneling of the shoe features a white polka dot sashiko stitching, which is repeated along the length of the laces. The box also includes Sashiko-inspired details, including tear-away sections to reveal COSTS’ in-house Lychee print underneath.
