New Balance’s 1500 silhouette has seen a spike in special releases since its 30th-anniversary celebration last year, which included several high-profile collaborations and limited-edition drops. This week, the retro runner returns to its roots in a soft grey colorway.

The New Balance 1500 might be one of the brand’s most important sneakers. Designed by footwear legend Steven Smith in 1989, the 1500 is a slightly oversized distance running shoe, built to provide comfort and stability on long runs. Constructed from a mix of mesh and pigskin suede, the shoe’s level of comfort was so high that it quickly became a fan-favorite casual shoe as well, giving the 1500 the longevity to still be on retail shelves a full 31 years after it initially released. Now, the smooth silhouette releases in special-edition versions like this week’s Made in England iteration, constructed in New Balance’s Flimby factory. The latest colorway begins in plain white for the 1500’s base layers, before adding the usual suede overlays to the toe box and quarter panels in light grey suede. Next, the forefoot mid layers are added in a deep burgundy tone, which is reflected in the toe’s accents as well we the embroidered ‘N’ logo. Finally, a dark navy blue heel counter completes the look.
