New Balance Revives the Original “Grey” Colorway of the 850

The New Balance 850 is making a comeback. After reappearing at Aimé Leon Dore earlier this year for the first time since 1996, the 850 has been on every New Balance head’s mind ever since. This week, the original grey colorway returns.

The New Balance 850 isn’t just any other silhouette from the Boston brand’s archives. Originally released in 1996, the ML850 was New Balance’s first big leap into more modern product for a much younger audience. The key feature of the silhouette is the removal of the famous oversized “N” logo that covered every single New Balance shoe at the time. Instead, the brand opted for a much more subtle NB script on both the tongue and heel. Combined with the 850’s sleek and wavy overlays, this made for a much more eye-catching design than anything New Balance had been working on at the time. This week, the 850 returned in only its second colorway this year, while the original yellow and blue look continues its slow rollout process. The fresh look, also an original color scheme, features a black mesh base layer for the upper, reinforced by grey suede overlays as well as white tumbled leather. Flashes of red are found on the tongue, inner lining, and heel logos to complete the look.
