The New Balance “Boro Pack” Features traditional Japanese Patchwork

New Balance is set to release a unique “Boro Pack” that pays homage to the traditional Japanese patchwork art. The pack includes the New Balance 550 and 580 models, both of which feature a variety of textures and shades of indigo, reminiscent of the boro technique that originated in the 1850s in rural Japan. This method was a practical solution for farmers to repair clothing and blankets during the cold months, using layered, patched cotton or hemp.

Each pair showcases a mix of materials, including soft suede, hairy suede, pre-aged suede, denim, woven canvas, and cracked leather on the 550s. The intricate patchwork design is held together with exposed white stitching, giving the shoes an authentic, hand-sewn look that’s both stylish and steeped in history.
