New Balance Debuts a Special-Edition M1300 Crafted by Hand in Japan for $670

Japan’s love of New Balance footwear has brought about some incredible projects from the American brand, and this year’s celebration of the retro 1300 model has been no exception. This week, the ’80s runner released in limited handmade pairs, exclusive to Japan.

New Balance’s celebration of the classic 1300 runner continues this month, once again with another Japan-exclusive release. While it will be nearly impossible to get here in the states, the nature of this pair still warrants our attention. Originally released in 1984, the New Balance 1300 was the first running shoe priced over $100, ($130 to be specific), and the 1300JP, made in Japan, elevated the shoe even further. This week, New Balance is honoring that original release with a special-edition pair of the M1300 crafted by M.Lab master leatherworker Hitoshi Mimura. Constructed from light veg-tan leather that will patina over time, this version is near identical to the original shoe, with panels cut to match as closely as possible. This kind of craftsmanship is not readily available, however, as this release will be available exclusively via New Balance’s flagship store in Tokyo, as well as their Japanese website, with a price tag of $673.
